Style Timeline

Renaissance painting(1400’s - 1500’s)
Was an art period which developed in conjunction with science, literature, music and philosophy during the 14th century up to the mid 15th century. Its perceived as a rebirth of ancient traditions. Its main characteristic was its highly realistic, linear perspective.
Two famous renaissance artists where - 
Leonardo Davinci - often credited as being one of the greatest painters of all time.
Michelangelo - is also often credited as being one of the greatest painters.

Rococo(1720-1780)
The Rococo movement developed in Paris, France as a reaction to the earlier movement, Baroque which was linear, had strict regulations and was to grandeur. 
Two famous Rococo artists where-  
Franz Anton Bustelli - regarded as the finest modeller of porcelain in the Rococo style.

Impressionism(1870-1880’s)
Impressionism (named after a Claude Monet painting called impression,sunrise) was an art movement started in France, by a group of Paris - based artists. The style of impressionism is often characterised by its thin but visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on light and its ordinary subject matter.
Two famous impressionists painters were - 
Claude Monet - founder of the movement
Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Expressionism(1905-1930)
Expressionism started in Germany during the start of the 20th century. It presented art in a distorted,  highly emotional style to evoke moods and ideas. Expressionist artists would often express meaning or emotion rather than the actual figure. 
Two famous expressionist artists where - 
Edvard Munch - most famous for his painting ‘the scream’
Egon Schiele- A famous Austrian painter

Harlem Renaissance(1920 -1930) 
Was a cultural movement centred in the Harlem neighbourhood of New York City.
Two famous artists-
Charles Henry Alston - A sculptor, artist, illustrator and muralist.
Aaron Douglas - Major artist in the Harlem renaissance.

Bauhaus movement (1919 to 1933)
Was a school in Germany that combined crafts and arts. Its idea was to create a ‘total’ work of art in which all aspects of art where combined including architecture. 
Two famous Bahaus artists were - 
Walter Gropius - founder of the Bauhaus movement .
Anne Albers - textile and print maker.

Socialist realism(1930 -1950) 
Socialist realism was a art movement developed in the soviet union. Its main goal was to further the goals of socialism and communism and glorify the ‘working class’.. 
Two famous artists - 
Alexander Semionov - A Leningrad school of painters representative. Famous for his cityscapes
Grekov Mitrophan

Minimalism(1960 - 1970) 
Minimal ism describes various forms of art and design where all non essential forms are eliminated, there by keeping only the essentials and exposing the essence of the work.
Two famous artists-
Robert Morris -  An American sculptor, conceptual artist and writer. One of the most prominent practitioners of minimalism. 
Anne Truitt - A major American artist of the mid 20th century.

Young British Artists(1980-1990)
YBA (young British artists) was a loose group of visual artists who exhibited there work together during the late, early 1990’s. 
Two famous artists-
Damien Hirst - The richest artist in Britain And the most prominent from the YBA’s.
Tracey Emin - Another prominent figure of the YBA’s

Digital Art(1990- present)
A general term used to describe the works and practices of artists using digital technology. 
Two famous artists -
Lillian F. Schwartz - known as the creator of digital art.
Pacal Dombis - digital artist known for creating excessive repetitions of patterns using digital processes.
