trends and designers by bigboi158

John Mcormack
As art  & design becomes more and more digitised it opens up a whole new world of possibilities and what we define as art. At the Agideas conference  a lot of the speakers where now working in the digital medium to produce there work. John Mcormack is a fine example of using 21st century technology, combining it with biology to create beautiful pieces of art. John, a professor at Monash University created a software program which mimics the process of evolution to grow flowers, plants and even massive worlds all by it self. He or his team has no input in what the artwork will turn out to be like, just like natural selection it all depends on certain factors like the environment, the DNA of the seed ( referring to the example) mutated genes etc... It is quite ingenious but at the same time one could argue if it is ethically right to claim work that essentially you did not make.  Nonetheless it is a fine yet slightly disturbing example of the direction art and design is going down.

Tea Packaging for Yauatcha, by Madethought Studio.
Madethought, probably one of the best speakers at Agideas, often do very simple yet beautiful designs using mainly typography as the only tool for communication. As you can see in the example, its so elegant, yet the design is very minimal. The type is positioned precisely and the contrast between the glossy white and the colours inside make it stand out that little more. The package design is very unique as well, thin, functional and aesthetically pleasing it breaks the conventional idea of tea packaging.

Fonts
The font I have used are from www.identifont.com
1. eurostile
The Eurostile typeface is a geometrical  sans – serif typeface. After making the mistake of Microgramma by only having upper-case letters Novarese decided to add lower case letters, a bold condensed variant and an ultra narrow design to the eurostile type family. It has a large x-height and is unique without being ‘show’. For example, it doesn’t act as a replacement for sans serif text faces like Universe or Franklin Gothic. Nevertheless, Eurostile is easy to use and it has the added benefit of standing out from the crowd of other typefaces in the sans serif genre. While many individual letters distinguish Eurostile on there own, some of the most interesting are the K and  lower case k, which have diagonals that do not touch the vertical stroke or the lowercase t, where the crossbar is long on the right and the long tail curves all the way back to vertical. A, M, N, V, and W all have flat apexes, and the Q has a strange tail longer on the inside of the character than on the outside. Eurostile’s lowercase a is of the traditional two-storied variety found in 19th century grotesques and most roman types. The crossbar of the f mimics that of the t, and the g is a single-storied, like that found in Helvetica or Futura.

Aboriginal Motifs by bigboi158

Aboriginal Motifs
Functions & Philosophies
One principle and protocol is respect.
As the original inhabitants of Australia, Aboriginal culture, images, design, stories and cultural expressions should always be respected. For example, when organising an exhibition, installation for local, state or national significance, it is always respectful to invite a representative of the traditional owners of the land and give a ‘welcome to country’ address. This address is cultural protocol when relating to indigenous people of the land.
Another example of respectful protocol was an incident involving the Metropolitan Land Council (MLC) in Sydney. It was consulted by Fiona Foley of Badtjala heritage in Queensland when she was developing a public artwork to be installed in Gadigal country, Sydney. This ensured it would not be offensive to the local community.
Another is Indigenous control.
Indigenous people have the right to determine how there culture will be used and in what context. They have the right to own and control there heritage which includes Indigenous motifs, art, stories and other forms of cultural expression. Involve Indigenous people including, artists, curators and communities in all stages of a project relating to there community or heritage.

Moral Rights and Issues
Moral rights mean that the artist has the right to have his or her name placed alongside each reproduction of his or her work. Normally in the Industry they also include the media, year, dimension, source of the licence and image, as shown in the following example.
Banduk Marika Djanda and the Sacred Waterhole, 1988 6 colour linocuts, ink on paper 53 cm x 29.5 cm Collection of the National Gallery of Australia Licence courtesy of the artist.
So if I was to use Aboriginal imagery or motifs as inspiration or as a basis for a drawing or design, I would have to reference the artist or designer. If it involved something on a more grander scale I would have to get permission from the Aboriginal community.

Native American motifs by bigboi158

Native American motifs

Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins are a NFL (national football league) franchise based in Maryland, Virginia, USA. Their logo consists of a Native American In a circle with yellow and white feathers coming of the side of it. It has sparked controversy over the years in relation to some Native Americans who find it Insensitive towards their culture and identity.
The logo from a design perspective doesn’t really jell together. The feathers go to far below the circle making the logo seem unbalanced. The colours derive from the teams uniforms and it would be a safe bet that they are influenced by colour used in Native American art. The chief inside the circle is the main focal point and draws your attention to him because of the thick stroked circle and the contrast of his dark face and the white background.
I personally don’t like the logo at all and evidently, after doing some research its constantly called one of the worst logos in the NFL and I can see why. It’s very bland and the colours are quite boring. And to top it of it seems like there’s blood on the feathers and they’ve made it yellow... I’ll let you guess what that could mean.

Clash Of The Titans By BigBoi158

1) Who are the Titans?
The Titans where powerful deities who ruled ‘the Greek Golden Age’ which was one of the five ages of man in Greek mythology. The titans where descendants of Gaia and Uranus, the great mother and father of all living things.
In Hesiods Theogony, the Titans and there descendants the Olympian gods wage a ten year war called Titanomacy. This was a series of battles fought in Thessaly before the existance of mankind. By the end of the war the Olympians emerged victorious and imprisoned the Titans in Tartarus thus becoming the gods of mankind (after they had being created).

2)Are the any interesting motifs you see frequently appearing (Eg. Lightning bolts)? How do you interpret their meaning? Can you name a modern version, of this motif, used today?
One motif was of course Zeus’s lighting bolts/strike, which in just about every material relating to Greek Mythology is always mentioned. In Clash of The Titans Zeus strikes down lighting or something similar at least twice to help out Perseus. A lighting bolt is bright and always white symbolizing good. Hades on the other hand, who appears in the movie, is always black and evil looking. Basically its the classic tale of good vs evil we continuously see and hear throughout movies, religion, books and on the news.

3) Is your Greek character in the movie? If so, does the film’s interpretation match your research?
No, my character Triton was not in the movie.

4) Are any of the characters, in the movie, related (Eg. a mother or father, wife or husband, brother or sister) to your Greek myth? If so, how?
Tritons father Poseidon is mentioned in the opening scene when the lady is telling the history of the war with the titans. Him, Zeus and Hades (all brothers) led the rebellion against the titans.

5) Is their a constellation of stars named after your Greek character?
No, but one of Neptune largest moons is called triton.

6) How is Medusa killed? Does your Greek character have a weakness?
Medusa was killed by getting her head chopped of. As Perseus and his band of brothers struggled to not look into medusa’s eyes which unfortunately turned some of them into stone , he used his quick wits, did a back flip and chopped her head of. Her snake body slithered into the firery depths of hell.
There is no known weakness of Triton.

7) Sketch at least 3 ideas for your logo and add them to this post.

Melbourne sports museum critques by Bigboi158

Melbourne Sports Museum Critiques.
Melbourne Cricket Club logo.
Design by J. Raulson in 1838.
The Melbourne Cricket Club was founded in 1838 and is thought to be the oldest sports club in Australia. The logo resembles the times of the clubs formation. It has that vintage feel to it, practically the typeface and the bold outlines of each letter. Contrast has being created by the colours chosen for each letter which focuses and brings forward certain objects creating a Hierarchy. In this case it's the bright red of the letter M. The symmetry and balance of the letters create a nice shape, along with the smooth curves.
I quite like the logo. Its symmetrical, nicely balanced, simplistic and has a modernised vintage feel to it. It represents, in a strong way, a very important part of Melbourne and Australia’s history and culture, which is probably the most important factor.

Melbourne victory Jersey.
Melbourne Victory is a soccer team found in 2004 with the inception of the new A-league season.
There logo and branding was done by Mileage Creative, A design studio based in Bendigo. There jersey’s main focal point is the V going across the chest and along the arms. The colour of it (white) creates contrast with the darker colours of the surrounding areas. The triangular shape also forms symmetry and balance. Also the tip of the triangle points to there main sponsor, Samsung, which I doubt wasn’t done unintentionally.  There’s also a sense of unity with the shape connecting to the white stripes. The colours are coolish blues and greys and silver. They encompass the traditional state sporting colours of Victoria.
The jersey’s colour is what I really like about it. I don’t like the placement of the logo’s, there to low and close together (the A-league logo and the Melb Victory logo). But at least there aligned perfectly. Also the sponsor, reebok is a downgrade from adidas.

Triton, Messenger of the Big sea written by Bigboi

Triton, Messenger of the Big sea.

History
Triton is a mythological Greek god, son of poseidon, god of the sea, and Amphitrite, goddess of the sea. He lived at the bottom of the sea with his parents and was often called the god of the massive Libyan salt lake called ‘tritonis’. Through out  history he has being represented as a merman, half man (upper body) half fish ( lower body).
Similar to his father he carried a trident, a spear with three spikes at the tip. However his special attribute was a twisted conch shell, which he blew like a trumpet to calm the or raise the seas. It was also used to scare giants and other creatures away as they imagined it to be a roar of a dark wild beast. He was first written about by Homer, a Greek poet, and in even greater detail by his contemporary, hesiod also a Greek poet, in theogony.
Hesiods theogony, is a large scale synthesis written around 700bc describing the origins and the genealogies of the Greek gods and there traditions. Its also the first to describe there permanent control over the cosmos and the roles they played to create an orderly universe from a chaotic one. Along with the highly influential Homer there poetry became known as Greek mythology.
Greek mythology can be traced back to the Mycenaean age (c. 1900 BC – c. 1100 BC, a cultural period of bronze age Greece. Martin P Nilsson, a  Swedish Mythographer and philologist, states that “It is evident that the heroes whose names belong to the series ending in -eus go back to earlier times than the heroes with common names, and to this philological fact corresponds the mythological fact that the latter are said to be sons and descendants of the former. But the latter are quite current in Homeric poetry; their ancestors must consequently go back to much earlier, pre-Homeric times. That this time is the Mycenaean”. if we want to go back further in history, it is thought that the early inhabitants of the Balkan peninsula, who assigned a spirit for everything in nature, later assumed human forms and entered local mythology as gods. When tribes from the north Balkan peninsula invaded, they brought a new pantheon of gods which eventually fused with those of which they invaded.

Appearance
Triton is always depicted as a merman and holding a trident. In Greek vase art he was depicted sometimes youthful sometimes bearded. In sculptures and mosaic art he would often have a twin fish tail or a dolphin tail. His skin would be ‘green tinged’ and have either blonde or black curly hair. His main attribute of course, would be his conch shell. His shoulders where often barnacled with sea shells as well.

Adventures
One story is that the argonauts ( a band of heroes in Greek mythology) where stranded in a desert and had to carry there ship to lake trito.Triton raised up from the seas and guided them back to the Mediterranean sea.
Another story is that he aided Zeus in the battle against the giants by blowing in his conch shell, frightening them and fleeing.

Relationships
Triton was the father of pallas and foster parent to the goddess Athena. Pallas was eventually killed by Athena in a feud. He is also  sometimes cited to be the father of Schylla (a sea monster) and Lamia (a queen of ancient Libya). His wives name has never being specified.

Symbols
The most recognizable symbol in reference to triton is of course, King triton from the little mermaid. He has very similar characteristics to the orginal appearance of triton in Greek mythology. He is king of the seas and ruler of ‘atlantica’. He has appeared in ‘god of war’ a game on the psp where he is depicted as a statue and his trident used as a weapon, he has appeared in the tv series Hercules and in the 1963 film ‘Jason and the argonauts’.

Evolution
Most people would recognize triton in his depiction in the little mermaid. Overtime the name triton became associated with a group of mermaid - like creatures which could be either male or female, they where called ‘the tritons’, He is also the mascot at the university of San diego.

List of sports
Triton would be good at representing most watersports. For example-
Swimming (racing)
Water polo
Canoeing
Fishing
Underwater rugby
Diving
Rowing
River rafting
Surfing
Water skating
Yachting
Wake boarding
kayaking
